Re-married Vagrants & Dear Stalker

Went down to Inflation last night on good ‘ol King Street (Melbourne) to see The Vagrants play a very special show. As mentioned in yesterday’s post, the band’s founding members, Steve & Renata, celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary on stage. As it turned out, they were re-married on stage by a celebrant (their backing vocalist) right before the show. Then it was down to business, a classic Vagrants blues-based rocking set complete with a brass section crescendo.

The Vagrants on stage last night at Inflation (House of Rock), Melbourne.

After The Vagrants, Dear Stalker hit the stage – a three piece alt-rock act with some good solid tunes. The show was tight & rocked out, the drummer smashing the crap outa the kit.

Dear Stalker, last night at Inflation (House of Rock).

Took me ages to get home after the show. King Street is a cab-ride desert at that time of the night. And you wanna get outa there before the street’s notorious drug & alcohol-fueled mayhem kicks in (about 2am). As it turned out, I ended up walking almost the whole way home, cabbing the last bit through Collingwood. Felt half reasonable today after the forced exercise…

Steve & Renata with new marriage certificate at last night’s show.

Congratulations Ren & Steve.

Raki Blues, Vagrants & Videos

Craigie went down to the Corner Hotel last night to see Snakadaktal. Haven’t heard how it went yet. I stayed home on account of a very big Thursday night, which snuck up on me in the form of a large bottle of Raki at Kim & Stalk’s place. Raki, in case you’d like to know, is a form of Turkish Ouzo. Nasty stuff. Staggered home with house-mate Scotty, basically propping each other up.

Tonight, The Vagrants play House of Rock at Inflation (King St, Melbourne). I’m gearing up to go. The band’s founders, Steve & Renata, are celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary on stage. Apparently, they met for the very first time at Inflation all those years ago.

Children Collide @ The Corner, Friday

Children Collide were magic at the Corner Hotel on Friday. I’d already seen the band a couple of times – first time in Texas at South By South West 2010 & last year at Splendour In The Grass. Never really quite got it. But that all changed Friday night.

Children Collide at The Corner (Melbourne) Friday 10Aug 2012.

There was an electricity in the room, the crowd primed with excitement. The band hit the stage & blew the roof off. Haven’t seen crowd-surfing in a pub for a long while.

There’s something really different about Children Collide. Huge sound from a 3 piece. It’s a post punk thing – but it totally rocks out, stunning dynamics, great songs, epic choruses. I tried to buy a t-shirt after the show but they’d sold out. Spent the next hour or so in the public bar talking with other over-excited fans about how great the band were. Haven’t experienced that for a while either. Bloody fantastic. I’m hooked. If you get a chance (the Corner show was sold out) go and see em before they’re too big to play in a club.

AC DC – Kate’s Live Video Favourite

We’re looking for your favourite live video. Today’s entry is from Kate. She sent us this video link – ACDC – ‘It’s a Long Way To The Top 1976’ . OK, we know it’s not quite ‘live’ – but we thought we’d bend the rules for this one (at the risk of a barrage of complaints – it is a classic). ‘Like’ it on our Facebook page or leave a comment here. Send us your favourite live video link & we’ll feature it here (& Facebook). Quick explanation from Kate below…

Kate’s explanation:
“Hey Marty, Here’s my live music nomination for the comp. You can’t get more live than takin’ it to the street on the back of a truck. I saw them live at the Shepparton Civic Centre when I was 15, the first real rock concert I’d been to… Sharpie dancing my heart out along with the rest of the teen population of Shepp. Ahhh… those were the days. The new chap is very good, but for me if it’s not Bon Scott, it’s not Acca Dacca. Enjoy! kate.”

Derek Trucks Live – Jonesy’s Live Video Favourite

Quick explanation from Graham below…

Graham’s explanation:
“Derek’s uncle, Butch, is a founding member of The Allman Brothers Band.  Trucks bought his first guitar at a yard sale for $5 at age nine and played his first paid performance at age 11.  Before his 13th birthday Trucks had “jammed” with Buddy Guy and gone on tour with The Allman Brothers Band.

Alice Cooper Live – Mat Ward’s Live Video Favourite

We’re looking for your favourite live video. Today’s entry is from Mat Ward who sent us this video link – Alice Cooper live in London. ‘Like’ it on our Facebook page or leave a comment here. Send us your favourite live video link & we’ll feature it here (& Facebook). Read Mat’s explanation below…

Mat’s explanation:

Roight, ere we go – this is a classic. Alice Cooper still going strong after over 40 years as the original shock rock star. This one has it all: World famous classic song, audience sing-a-long, giant balloons, swordplay, fabulous top hat and tails and my favourite ever lyric: “We got no class, we got no principals, we got no intelligence, we can’t even think of a word that rhymes!”.

Keep sending those video links!
